In line with our strategic focus on developing content together with children and young people, in their places and on their terms, and a need to be more inclusive through the use of music and sound we developed a set of stormbreak Musical Moves with children writing and performing the music that represented to them mental health concepts of resilience, self-care, relationships, self-worth and hope and optimism.
These young people were all students at Chetham's School of Music in Manchester, one of the world’s most celebrated and internationally renowned schools of music. Each child chose a mental health concept they were particularly drawn to, then composed an original score capturing the essence of what this concept meant to them.
The six new stormbreaks are presented by Joint Principal, Tom Redmond. Tom hosts these movement activities alongside the live music performed by the composers and their peers, bringing movement and music together in a fun and meaningful way.
Slo-Mo Self-worth:
This music composed by Danielle encourages children to think of a time they had success and perform a slo-mo movement representing their achievements.
Self-care Samba:
A body percussion stormbreak with team-work, that incorporates a samba break so you can rest and reset.
Bouncebackability:
This composition by 15 year old Bardo focuses on resilience. Bardo has included elements of rest within his resilience piece because ‘we can’t be resilient all the time’ and ‘it’s ok to let yourself rest’.
Stormbreak Schuplattler:
This piece was composed by Callum aged 17 years and includes the musical feature ‘scherzando’ (being performed in a playful manner). Callum describes the piece as ‘joyful, playful and skippy’, hoping it would make children laugh, smile and bring positive energy.
Relationship Rhythms:
Based on a musical technique called ‘phasing’, this stormbreak will see partners starting a clapping rhythm together, going in different directions, then coming back together again at the end.
Musical Meditation:
This composition by George helps us to ‘just be’, allowing us to find calm and peace in music.
